Cary-Grove's Hurley overcomes pain to win twice

It is amazing how far Cary-Grove junior Ricky Hurley might throw the shot put and discus when his right wrist heals.

Throwing in excruciating pain, Hurley was still able to claim the top spot in the discus with a throw 176 feet, 05 inches and the shot put with a heave of 56-11 at Thursday's McHenry County Meet hosted by Huntley High School.

"I could really feel my wrist hurting on my last shot put throw," said Hurley. "I am going to need to put some ice on it, maybe miss some practices and a meet. Rest should help."

Friday's events at Huntley will commence at 5 p.m.

After 7 events on the boys side, Huntley leads the way with 54 points followed by McHenry with 46.

The host Red Raiders got a first-place effort from Tim McCloyn, who won the long jump with a leap of 21-3.

Crystal Lake South's Jordan Zeken won the 3,200-meter run with a clocking of 10:42.84.

Girls: Cary-Grove sophomore Nikki Freeman seems to be ready for the postseason.

Freeman took top county honors in the discus with a throw of 127-04, easily outdistancing her Trojan teammate Olivia Roehri, who launched a throw of 118-0.

"I made some adjustments with my mechanics,"said Freeman. "I really put it together today. It is exciting to win county."

Cary-Grove, which is in first place with 71.5 points after 7 events, also got a first-place finish from Erika Sternard in the high jump with a leap of 5-2.

Sternard's teammate, Nicole Robbins, also jumped 5-2, but finished second because she had more misses than Sternard.

Huntley, which is second behind Cary-Grove with 49 points, received a first-place finish from junior Macy Tramblay in the triple jump with a leap of 36-7. Jacobs' Megan Jameson was the runner-up with a jump of 34-5 ½.

'I was not expecting to finish first," said Tramblay. "I figured if I jumped well I could finish in the top six. It is very exciting to win county. I was really comfortable jumping at home and I really put it together."

Tramblay's teammate, Delaney Lyman, took top honors in the long jump with a leap of 17-4½, while Faith Furio of Cary-Grove placed second with a leap of 16-11.

Kianna Clark of Crystal Lake South was crowned county champion in the shot put with a throw of 35-10½. Like in the discus, Roehri was second in the shot put with a throw 34-8.
