Illinois wildlife refuge plans bird-banding day

RINGWOOD - Ever wondered how wildlife biologists catch and band birds? Now's your chance to see it up close.

The Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge straddling the Illinois-Wisconsin state line will mark International Migratory Bird Day this weekend with bird-banding and family activities.

Mist nets set up at the Lost Valley Visitor Center in McHenry County's Glacial Park will capture songbirds on Saturday and Sunday morning. Visitors can watch biologist catch, band and release the birds.

Afternoon activities will be held Saturday at McHenry Dam and Sunday at Volo Bog. They'll include a bird behavior scavenger hunt, bird Bingo and other games.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service established the Hackmatack National Wildlife Refuge in 2012 with the goal of restoring and protecting tall-grass prairies, savannas and waterways.
