Zachary Clewell earns Eagle Scout award

Zachary Clewell, 15, son of Casey and Vicky Clewell of Lake in the Hills, became an Eagle Scout on Oct. 6, 2013. His accomplishment was celebrated in a Court of Honor on Sunday, April 6. A sophomore at Crystal Lake South High School, he is a member of Boy Scout Troop 152 in Algonquin.

Zachary's Eagle project was the removal of invasive sandbar willow plants surrounding Drake Pond in Lake in the Hills, which is in a residential neighborhood with a perimeter of 3,100 feet. This project was needed to rebalance the ecosystem because the sandbar willow plants are an invasive species and were choking out the natural species. The stumps were treated by village employees with a pesticide to prevent regrowth. This project involved 50 volunteers and 311 man hours.
