Mundelein musters up big Ballpark sweep

Mundelein's softball team had a ball at The Ballpark in Rosemont again.

After beating Grant at the outdoor stadium earlier this season, the Mustangs swept a doubleheader from Leyden Saturday, winning 13-0 in the opener and 21-8 in the second game.

Mundelein (9-5) had 41 hits on the day.

Maggie Mahar went 3-for-4 in Game 1, while contributing 2 hits apiece were Maddie Zazas, Maria DeVito (double, triple), Karlee Busscher, Lauren Fairweather and Nicole Parney (double, triple). Jamie Hemmer had a double as well. Parney pitched a five-inning complete game, scattering 3 hits.

Hemmer homered and drove in 6 runs in Game 2, which saw Mundelein pound out 24 hits in six innings. Hemmer finished 4-for-4, while Danielle Beelow was 4-for-5. Abbey Rosenow, Parney (4 RBI) and Holly Petlak each had 3 hits, while Zazas, DeVito and Busscher chipped in 2 hits apiece. Rosenow tripled. The Mustangs got doubles off the bats of Zazas, Brittany Woodyard (3 RBI), Beelow, Parney and Hemmer. Hemmer got the win, going all 6 innings and giving up 4 earned runs, while striking out three and not walking a batter.

Wauconda, Waukegan split: Kayla Wedl pitched her second straight no-hitter in a 3-0 victory, before Waukegan won 6-1 to hand the Bulldogs their first loss of the season to complete the nonconference doubleheader.

In Game 1, Wedl struck out 17, walked two and jacked a home run. She and Lauren Nee (double) each went 3-for-4.

Wedl did not pitch in Game 2. Wauconda (12-1) scored its only run in the first, as Nee led off with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Taylor McCarthy.

Lake Zurich 3, Prairie Ridge 2: Maria Schroeder went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles for the visiting Bears, who needed 10 innings to pull out the nonconference game.

Lake Zurich (9-3) also got a home run from Carlee Parsons.

Olivia Schneider pitched all 10 innings for Lake Zurich, allowing only 1 earned run.

Grayslake Central sweeps Highland Park: The visiting Rams won 9-1 and 19-5 in the nonconference doubleheader.

Grayslake Central (10-5) got 3 hits apiece from Brandy Heraty and Skyler Long (2 doubles, 4 RBI) in the 9-1 win. Katie Strickland, Teagan Truskowski and winning pitcher Reagen Radke (triple, stolen base) each added a pair of hits. Theresa Curtis had a single and 2 RBI.

Truskowski and Strickland both went 3-for-5 in the 19-5 victory. Heraty (3 RBI) and Long each had a pair of hits. Both of Heraty's hits were doubles. Truskowski and Curtis (3 RBI) both doubled, while Radke tripled again.

Heraty pitched all 7 innings for the win.

Richmond-Burton 8, Grayslake North 3: At Antioch, Mariah Gentile and Jenny Moore (double, RBI) each had 2 hits for the Knights.

Grayslake North 12, Antioch 2: At Antioch, Sarah Littleton homered twice and drove in 4 runs, and Nikki Livengood also hit a ball over the fence for the Knights.

Kayla Switalla had 2 hits as well for Grayslake North.

Antioch got its only hit off Livengood from Jessica Tyrell.

Addison Trail 5, Antioch 4: At Antioch, in the first game of their District-117 invite, the Sequoits allowed the winning run in the eighth.

Hannah Skoog was 2-for-3 for Antioch, while Jillian Foote had a double.

Antioch 8, Johnsburg 2: At Antioch, the host Sequoits wrapped up their District-117 invite with a win, as Jessica Tyrell hit her third home run of the week.

Antioch (4-7, 1-2 on the day) got a 3-for-3 effort from Jessica Pedersen (double). Hannah Skoog, Tyrell and Madeline Hart each had 2 hits. Winning pitcher Hannah Cook threw all 7 innings and did not allow an earned run.

Grayslake North 5, Lakes 5: At Lakes, Kate Hohenstatt singled and doubled for the Eagles.

Grayslake North got triples from Jenny Moore, Mariah Gentile and Kayla Switalla. Gentile and Nikki Livengood doubled.

Carmel, Marian Catholic split: In the East Suburban Catholic Conference doubleheader, the Corsairs lost 14-13 in nine innings - despite Jenny Behan's eighth and ninth home runs of the season - before winning 11-6.

In Game 1, Behan went 4-for-5 and knocked in 7 runs. Kathleen Felicelli was 3-for-5, Sarah Koesser went 2-for-5 with a homer and 3 RBI, and Madi Demarco also homered.

Carmel (9-5, 1-1) got a home run from Claire Petrus (3 RBI) in Game 2. Other big offensive performances came from Felicelli (3-for-3, 2 runs), Behan (2-for-4, double, 3 RBI), Amy Abel (2-for-3, RBI) and Emma Bartz (1-for-2, 2 RBI).

Vernon Hills splits: At Vernon Hills, the Cougars beat Deerfield 12-5 and lost to Hersey 19-9 in a triangular.

The Cougars' Anna Cirone was 4-for-4 with 2 RBI against Deerfield. Vernon Hills got 3 hits apiece from Rose Ferolo (double, 2 RBI) and Danielle Comitor, while Sami Saliba was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Vernon Hills (3-11) got a 3-hit game from Dana Meline against Hersey. Ferolo had 2 hits and an RBI, while Anna Polisky singled and knocked in 2 runs.
