No wins yet? Fire not at all worried

Talking with Chicago Fire players and coaches right now is a little bit like listening to Bobby McFerrin sing "Don't Worry, Be Happy."

So what if the Fire (0-5-1, 5 points) is winless in its first six matches? It has earned a point with a draw in each of its last five matches, and there's a long way to go until the regular season ends in October.

"Everything is good," Fire forward Mike Magee said. "Obviously, we want to win, but I don't think we've lost a game since March 9th or something. That's not easy to do. We're happy and hungry.

"I'm not (feeling pressure to win Saturday). I'm sure some guys are. I've had some pretty bad starts in my 12 years (in MLS) and we've ended up just fine. I'm not worried about it. As a group I think we kind of need it. We need it, and we deserve it. I think guys just (want) to see the hard work pay off a little bit."

"We've played well enough to win games. We've not been hanging on for a tie and lucky to get a tie," added first-year Fire coach Frank Yallop, describing himself as a glass half-full person.

The Fire's next chance to get 3 points is Saturday's nationally televised match at Toyota Park (3 p.m., NBCSN) against the New England Revolution.

"No matter what happens on Saturday, our performance, especially the last two games, has been what I want and what the team is going to look like," Yallop added. "It won't be flat. We'll come out buzzing. I'm excited about this game."

Injury update:

Midfielder Dilly Duka is back in full training with his teammates after a hamstring injury, but left back Gonzalo Segares spent Thursday's practice working on the side of the field to return from a high ankle sprain suffered at Portland that has sidelined him the past four games. Yallop hopes Segares is available May 3 against Real Salt Lake after next week's bye week.

"I'm getting better," said Segares, injured when the Timbers' Diego Chara gave him a shove after the off-balance Segares had cleared the ball. "It's not as fast as I would like, so it's very frustrating. It's been a long time since I've been hurt like this. … I'm seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I'm getting more into the practices and pushing so that hopefully I'll be full-go soon."

Greg Cochrane, a second-year pro acquired from the Los Angeles Galaxy just days before the season opener, has filled in for Segares and done well.

"I've been pleased with him," Yallop said. "It's not an easy thing to do is be consistent and strong in our league. Greg's not letting himself down at all. He's an up-and-coming player who's learning as he goes along.

"One thing about him is he doesn't shirk a run or a play. He tries his best, and I can live with that."

Reserve defender Hunter Jumper is away from the team to attend to personal issues, Yallop said.

Doubleheader:

Mike Magee, a Long Grove native, will stick around after Saturday's Fire match to watch cousin Jackie Santacaterina, from Geneva, and the Chicago Red Stars take on the Western New York Flash at 5:45 p.m. at Toyota Park in a National Women's Soccer League game. It will be the Red Stars' season opener.

"Absolutely," said Magee, who comes from a tight-knit family. "I'm very happy her game is after mine so I can enjoy it. Hang with the family, and that will be really cool."

The cousins aren't the only connection between the two teams. Fire rookie Harry Shipp remembers the Red Stars' Rachel Quon from their days at Lake Forest High School.

"My sister actually played high school soccer with her, so my sister knows her; we know the family pretty well, I'm actually getting tickets for her dad (for Saturday)," said Shipp, adding he probably will join his parents to watch some of the Red Stars game.

Both Quon and Shipp won national championships, Quon at Stanford and Shipp at Notre Dame. Both were Hermann Trophy nominees and team captains in college.

The Red Stars will play the remainder of their home games this season at Benedictine University in Lisle.
