Woman who used cocaine before crash avoids prison

GREENFIELD, Ind. - A central Indiana woman is avoiding prison after pleading guilty to driving under the influence of cocaine when she caused a crash that killed her husband.

A Hancock County judge on Tuesday ordered that 30-year-old Rebecca Garner of Greenfield serve four years on work release or home detention, followed by four years of probation.

The Daily Reporter reports Garner told investigators after the August 2013 crash near Fortville that she had used cocaine within the previous days, and tests found high-enough cocaine levels for her to be considered impaired. Authorities say she drove through a stop sign into the path of a pickup truck.

The father of Chad Garner asked the judge for leniency on behalf of his former daughter-in-law.
