Chicago announces drop in youth smoking rates
New survey data show fewer Chicago high school students are smoking than ever before.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office released the city's data on Tuesday, ahead of a national report expected in June from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The smoking rate for Chicago high school students has dropped to a new low. Fewer than 11 percent of Chicago high school students reported smoking in 2013, down from more than 13 percent in 2011.
The figures come from the CDC's Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System.
Emanuel's office says the mayor has supported the regulation of e-cigarettes, banning the sale of flavored tobacco near Chicago schools and a 50-cent per pack cigarette tax increase.
