Cops: Man arrested after trying to report drug dealer

Tyrone Readus called an emergency dispatcher to report a man tried to sell marijuana to him, but Round Lake Park police said he and the accused dealer wound up being arrested.

Police Chief George Filenko said what Readus didn't tell the dispatcher is he robbed Deshawn Jennings at gunpoint on the 300 block of Fairlawn Drive.

Readus, 27, of the 900 block of Vermont Avenue in Chicago, was charged with armed robbery and remains in the Lake County jail on $250,000 bail. Filenko said Readus had been staying with a relative on Fairlawn Drive who wanted “to keep him away from the city.”

Jennings, 18, of the 300 block of Brierhill Drive in Round Lake Park, was charged with unlawful possession of cannabis. Police said he was released on his own recognizance.

Police said officers were sent to Fairlawn Drive about 7:20 p.m. Monday after Readus called to complain about Jennings coming to the door of the home where he was staying and trying to sell the pot to him. Readus also said a black sport utility vehicle was periodically cruising past the house.

Officers sent to the area found the SUV and made a traffic stop, Filenko said. After receiving consent to search the vehicle, the cops found about six grams of marijuana that the driver said belonged to Jennings, according to authorities. The driver was not charged in the case.

After Jennings was found on foot, he told the officers Readus robbed him at gunpoint, Filenko said. The chief said Jennings also told authorities that Readus asked him to bring the pot to the house.
