Becker keys Harper turnaround

After starting the season 2-6 on its opening road trip of the season, the Harper baseball team quickly turned around its fortunes.

The Hawks had rattled off 10 straight wins to improve to 11-6 before dropping a dropping a 13-8 decision to Elgin Community College on Friday.

Hawks third baseman Kurt Becker has been a catalyst for the Hawks' recent success. The Palatine graduate was awarded NJCAA Division III National Player of the Week.

The sophomore's .544 batting average placed him fourth nationally, and his consistency from March 31 to April 6 impressed. Becker nearly matched his season batting average, hitting .545 (12-for-22), but was extra productive in generating offense as he homered, drove in 8 runs and scored 16 times.

Becker has been a problem on the basepaths for opponents, too, and has swiped five bases.
