Mundelein's Hemmer sews up first varsity win

Jamie Hemmer made the most of her first varsity pitching start for Mundelein's softball team.

The junior right-hander pitched a five-inning no-hitter, and Abbey Rosenow hit a pair of home runs, as the Mustangs defeated visiting Highland Park 11-0 in a nonconference game Friday.

Hemmer, who had been hitting regularly in Mundelein's lineup, struck out three and walked two.

"Jamie didn't pitch a lot in the off-season," Mundelein coach Brett Wilhelm said. "We certainly knew what Jamie was capable of doing. She throws hard. She was finding the strike zone, and she's gotten better and better with that. She's starting to understand pitching."

Brittany Woodyard (3-for-3) and Nicole Parney also homered for Mundelein (6-4). Parney's homer was her third of the season, tying her with Rosenow for the team lead. Holly Petlak doubled twice for the Mustangs. Amanda Diaz and Maria DeVito each tripled and singled, and Hemmer helped her own cause with a double.

Carmel 11, Vernon Hills 0: Claire Petrus went 4-for-5 with a double and 4 RBI to lead the visiting Corsairs in the nonconference game.

Carmel (6-4) received 2 hits apiece from winning pitcher Mia Dicara (3 runs, RBI), Madi Demarco (2 runs) and Emma Bartz (RBI). Dicara pitched a six-inning shutout with 6 strikeouts.

Carly Stern had the lone hit for Vernon Hills (1-10).

Libertyville 12, Rolling Meadows 3: The Wildcats continue to pound the softball and, more importantly, win.

Andi Katz clobbered 2 home runs, finishing 5-for-5 with 5 RBI and 4 runs scored to lead Libertyville (10-0) in the nonconference game. Jessie Lauret was 3-for-4, while contributing 2 hits apiece were Madi Dembinski (double), Jamie Stevens and Sam Hilldale. Kenzie Rother roped a double.

Haley Alban pitched 4 innings for the win, and Carlie Haraden threw the final 3 to pick up the save. The Libertyville defense shined, too, as shortstop Tayler Oberman turned a double play and the freshman Hilldale made a diving catch in center field.

"Big plays on defense kept us out of some big innings," Wildcats coach Elissa Wisniewski said.

Grayslake Central 15, Dundee-Crown 3: Brandy Heraty homered, and Katie Strickland had 3 hits, including a double, as the Rams won the Fox Valley Conference game in Carpentersville.

Shelby White added a pair of hits and 2 runs scored, Emma Eiserman scored three times, and Kaleigh Snyder and Teagan Truskowski chipped in doubles for Grayslake Central (6-5). Truskowski and Skyler Long had 4 and 3 RBI, respectively. Reagan Radke earned her first varsity win, allowing only 1 earned run in a seven-inning complete game.

Grayslake North 14, Prairie Ridge 14 (susp.): The Fox Valley Conference game in Crystal Lake was suspended in the bottom of the seventh.

Grayslake North has 2 hits apiece from Kayla Switalla (4 RBI), Kelsey Delahunty (3 RBI), Jenny Moore and Maddie Terlap. Delahunty, Danielle Runyon, Switalla and Nikki Livengood (2 RBI) each has a double for the Knights.
