Discover local Schaumburg parks on a day dedicated to outdoor play.

Schaumburg Park District will take part in National Kids to Parks Day on May 17. National Kids to Parks Day is a nationwide day of outdoor play organized by the National Park Trust. The event encourages children across the country to explore neighborhood parks.

The District encourages families to take a spring stroll around Volkening Lake, 900 W. Schaumburg Road. Families can enjoy the fresh air and scenic beauty including the lake, flowerbeds, Tribute Park and picnic area. The spot is great for bird-watching, basking in nature and exercising.

Explore Spring Valley, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road, during a day full of events including:

• Flower Power from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Children will become flower detectives as they look for blossoms in the woods and prairies.

• Spring into Gardening from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Kids can get their hands dirty while prepping the garden for summer. Participants will learn about compost and will plant their own seeds to take home.

• Night of the Frogs from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Attendees will hike the wetlands of Spring Valley in a search for hoppy amphibians that ribbit and croak.
