Fake solicitors pose as sheriff's deputies

MENOMONIE, Wis. - Barron County sheriff's officials say someone posing as a member of the department is trying to scam money from unsuspecting citizens. The sheriff's department says it received more than a dozen reports Tuesday afternoon of someone soliciting money on behalf of deputies for various programs, including drug abuse resistance education, or DARE.

The caller offers to stop by your house or business and pick up the check or cash. Deputies ask that those who are solicited contact the sheriff's department.
