Peterson, Wauconda grab first win

Wauconda's baseball team got its first win of the season Tuesday, and Ben Peterson made sure of it.

Peterson went the distance on the mound, as the Bulldogs defeated visiting Johnsburg 4-0 in a nonconference game. The senior righty allowed only 4 hits, struck out eight and walked three.

“He pitched very well,” Wauconda coach Bill Sliker said. “He threw strikes, attacked the zone, and didn't fall behind a lot of hitters. That's why his pitch count wasn't up too high.”

Wauconda (1-5) received 2 hits apiece from Collin Shrader, Joey Lovelle and Joey Schaer.

Carmel 3, Glenbrook South 0: Illinois-bound Quinten Sefcik dominated on the mound, striking out 15 and allowing just 3 hits in a complete-game performance. He walked only one.

Carmel (10-2-1) had only 4 hits, including doubles by Andy Kantor (RBI), Cal Coughlin (RBI) and Nick Grandolfo. Bradley-bound Ian Kristan singled and walked three times.

Antioch 14, North Chicago 0: Collin Prather paced the Sequoits in their North Suburban Prairie opener, going 3-for-3 with a home run, double and 5 RBI.

Ryan Karagiorgas pitched a five-inning complete game for Antioch, striking out 13 while allowing only 1 hit and not walking a batter.

The Sequoits also got a double and an RBI from Bob Hamilton and 2 RBI from Ben Gutke.

Grant 12, Round Lake 2: Ryan Mason went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI, as the visiting Bulldogs won the North Suburban Prairie opener to improve to 7-0.

Tim Hollins had a double, and winning pitcher Jacob Lewis threw 5 innings, striking out four and allowing 1 earned run.

Vernon Hills 4, Lakes 2: Nick Newman gave up only 1 earned run and 2 hits over 6 innings, striking out seven and walking one in notching his third win of the season.

Vernon Hills got all of its runs in the North Suburban Prairie opener in the bottom of the third inning. Jacob Feece led with a hit and moved to second base on Pat Crowley's groundout. Connor McNamara was then hit by a pitch, and one out later, Tommy Earhart walked to load the bases.

Then on a full count, Joey Marras drove in Feece and McNamara with a single. On the same play, Earhart scored on a throwing error. The Cougars weren't finished, as Jordan Freibrun (2-for-3) doubled home Marras for the fourth run of the inning.

Lakes (0-5) scored in the top of the fourth. After two out, Joe Sisk walked and was driven home by a triple off the bat of Matt Nordlund. Newman then struck out the next batter to end the threat.

Lakes threatened again in the seventh. Justin Blasinski led off the inning with a walk, and Cody Nuxoll reached on an infield hit. Crowley, on in relief, got an out before Joe Dahlke reached on a dropped-third strike to put the tying run on first, as Nuxoll scored to cut the Eagles' deficit to 2 runs.

But Crowley recorded the final two hitters to notch the save.

Grayslake Central 4, Prairie Ridge 3: The host Rams overcame an early 3-0 deficit to win in Fox Valley Conference action.

Sam Nozicka's two-out double got Grayslake Central (6-3) on the board in the fourth inning, and RBI singles by Freddie Landers and Kyle Clark tied the game in the fifth.

The Rams scored the go-ahead run in the sixth, as Nozicka led off by getting hit by a pitch. An error and stolen base got him to third, where he scored on a sacrifice fly from winning pitcher Mike Stone.

Stone picked up his first win in relief of starter Russ Lundius. Stone tossed 2⅓ scoreless innings, striking out three. Clark pitched the seventh for his first save.

“Great comeback win against a great team,” Rams coach Troy Whalen said. “Mike Stone pitching for the first time in varsity action was outstanding. He really stepped up.”

Huntley 4, Grayslake North 1: Merrick Gentile and Andrew Mikusa each had a pair of hits for the host Knights, who fell to 5-4 with the Fox Valley Conference loss.

Austyn Ruback doubled and knocked in Grayslake North's lone run.
