Elgin man, teenager charged in attempted armed robbery

An Elgin man and a 17-year-old have been charged with trying to rob a cabdriver stopped near Crystal and Mountain streets, authorities said.

Jeremy Jones, 20, of the 300 block of Washington Street, and the 17-year-old were charged with attempted armed robbery and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, both felonies.

One of the suspects demanded money from the cabdriver and then struck the victim in the head with a handgun about 12:20 p.m. Sunday, police said in a news release.

The cabdriver, who suffered minor injuries, was able to drive away and contact police before any money was taken, police said.

Detectives from the Elgin Police Department's Major Investigations Division arrested the 17-year-old Monday. The teenager was taken to the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center for a detention hearing.

Jones was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon, police said. He will appear in Kane County bond court Wednesday morning.
