Arlington Hts. runner stays the course for 31 years

Dave Raub has run the same exact six-mile route through Arlington Heights most every day for 31 years.

Thursday's weather was less than ideal.

"My wet hands were stinging and actually hurting from the cold, so I tucked them into the sleeves of my jacket for most of the route," said Raub, who doesn't wear waterproofed clothes, gloves or shoes when running in the rain. "I normally warm up after a couple of miles."

Raub selected the route to cross the least amount of streets and intersections possible.

Unable to participate in road races due to two operations on his left knee, the Arlington Heights business owner volunteers as an assistant track coach at Prospect High School.

"I ran track in high school and college and I enjoy helping young runners achieve their goals."

Raub said his favorite time of year to run is summer.

"I love running all year, but prefer the temperature above 50 degrees. I can just put my shoes on and run out the door."

When he is on vacation, Raub runs between four and 10 miles a day. "I only skip running if I'm sick, which is only a couple days every few years."

Raub said he loves the feel of running. "It's also healthy."

Reminiscent of the repetition in the movie "Groundhog Day," Raub said he sees the same runners, dog walkers and shop owners along the route each day.

Raub has never felt in danger on his route, but he always takes note of dogs.

"Runners are a red flags to dogs - they want to chase us - and you never know how a dog is going to react."
