Lake Park Golf Course Opens for the Season

Lake Park Golf Course, 1015 Howard Street, opens for the season on April 5. The 18-hole, par three sporty course overlooks Lake Opeka and has holes that range from 50 to 115 yards. "Lake Park is the perfect course to practice your short game, and a great place for everyone, especially youth, to learn how to play golf," said Brian Panek, Manager of Golf and Facilities. For more than seven years, the Des Plaines Park District has participated in the Sticks for Kids program, which provides clubs at no cost to young golfers. "Whether for camp, lessons, or to play a round of golf, the clubs are free," said Panek. "We know that parents are cost conscious, especially during the summer, and with the Sticks for Kids program Lake Park Golf Course is a safe, affordable place for kids to get active and enjoy a sport they can play their whole life."

Back by popular demand, and due to the economy, the Des Plaines Park District will offer Lake Park Golf Memberships again this year. The memberships are part of the 2014 Recreation Relief program that helps make leisure sports affordable. Resident golfers pay a flat rate of $325 for a membership for the season; seniors, over 60 years of age, and youth golfers under 18, pay $300. "The cost savings per person is dependent on how often a golfer plays at Lake Park," said Panek. The Lake Park Golf Course is open approximately 32 weeks a year, 8:00am until dusk through May, and 7:00am until dusk June through October. Residents pay $10 during the week and $11 on the weekend for 18 holes. "An average golfer plays twice a week," said Panek, "at that rate, the savings is about $290 for the season. For seniors who play daily, the savings is even greater."

If a seasonal membership exceeds your recreation budget this summer, the Park District has three alternative ways to save on the sport. "We have a 10-play punch card which reduces the cost of a round to $8, Senior Appreciation Mondays, where anyone over the age of 65 can golf for $7 all day with a valid ID, and Family Specials, where kids can golf for only $7 when a parent plays at the regular rates," said Panek. "It's time to get out and play."
