Boys volleyball

Vernon Hills d. Prospect: Lem Turner slammed 11 kills and posted 6 blocks, as the Cougars opened the season with a 26-24, 25-18 win over Prospect.

Mike Heinz added 7 kills for Vernon Hills, while Jared Bennet set 18 of 19 with 12 assists. The Cougars' other contributors included Dylan DeBoer (4 kills, 2 blocks), Cory Levin (8 assists), Tyler Small (3 blocks) and Max Spiglanin (9 digs, 2 kills, 3 blocks).

"This was a nice first match for us," Vernon Hills coach Chris Curry said. "We blocked pretty well and stayed very aggressive in a conservative offense. Lem Turner was very active in the middle, and both Mike Heinz and Dylan DeBoer made great decisions on the outside."
