'Without Warning' is one of Rosenfelt's best

A hurricane and the collapse of a dam start a cascade of terrible events in "Without Warning," David Rosenfelt's latest twisted thriller.

Police Chief Jake Robbins, who has a tumultuous relationship with the press, is forced to work with newspaper editor Katie Sanford. They dated in high school, but married other people.

Jake's wife, Jenny, was murdered by Katie's husband, Roger, shortly after the news of their affair broke. Roger, who was found guilty, was killed in prison. Since then, Katie and Jake only speak to each other when it's absolutely necessary.

The flood from the collapsed dam unearths a time capsule that contains a set of predictions, including Jenny's murder. Jake and Katie must put aside their differences and work together to stop a killer.

The compelling story line and characters drive this head-scratching mystery, and "Without Warning" is another outstanding novel from Rosenfelt.
