Des Plaines gets funds to tear down homes in flood plain

Des Plaines will receive $2.7 million in federal funds to tear down 21 homes in the flood plain along the Des Plaines River and replace them with open space, the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced Friday.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District will provide another $900,000 for the project.

The grant is good news for residents who have been devastated multiple times by flooding, said Jonathon Monken, director of the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.

He said the grant will allow those residents to move out of the flood plan and "avoid future heartache and property losses."
