VH's Crowley tosses no-hitter in season-opening win

Pat Crowley had quite a memorable start to his senior baseball season.

The Vernon Hills pitcher fired a five-inning no-hitter, allowing a pair of unearned runs, as the Cougars opened their season with a 7-2 win over visiting Waukegan on Friday.

Things started out shaky for Crowley, a four-year varsity player, as Waukegan took advantage of leadoff walks and used small ball and good baserunning to push across a run in each of the first two innings. From there, Crowley settled down to allow only one more runner for the remaining three frames.

John Goehrke (2-for-3, 2B, 2 RBI) hit a two-out single in the third to put the Cougars in the lead for good. Connor McNamara (1-for-2, 3B, 2 RBI) extended the lead in the fourth with a two-out triple.

Joey Marras and Jordan Freibrun also had hits for Vernon Hills.
