Learn about lung health, cancer at MCC April 2

Centegra Health System will host a lung health symposium from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, at McHenry County Community College, 8900 Route 14, Crystal Lake. Those who want to learn more about lung health and lung cancer are invited to attend the symposium. Lung cancer in McHenry County remains the No. 1 cause of death.

The annual event will feature an informative and interactive lecture by board-certified doctors who specialize in lung issues. Cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon Dr. Thomas Hinkamp, diagnostic radiologist Dr. John Guido and radiation oncologist Dr. Terrence Bugno will present. They are all independent physicians on the medical staff at Centegra Health System. They will discuss aspects of lung health, information about the main causes of lung cancer, and what people can do to prevent, detect and treat it. Smoking cessation efforts, radon detection, preventive lung health and more will be highlighted.

"Beyond more effective, individualized treatments for lung cancer, there must be more focused attention paid to known causes and prevention," Bugno said. "New lung cancer screening programs are available to detect this condition in its earliest, more treatable stages. Too often, lung cancer shows no symptoms until it has already spread throughout the body."

Bugno said that by expanding the community's understanding of lung cancer's causes, more appropriate health behaviors could be adopted. The symposium will feature a question-and-answer session that will include other Centegra health care providers.
