Kitchen fire leaves Wheaton townhouse unit uninhabitable

Residents of a Wheaton townhouse were forced to evacuate Thursday morning after a fire started in the kitchen of one of the units, according to a news release.

Firefighters responded around 7:45 a.m. to a fire in the 1300 block of East Loughborough Court, in a center unit of a four-unit townhouse building, officials said.

All four units were occupied at the time of the fire. Officials said every resident evacuated safely, although one resident from the unit where the fire started was treated for a minor injury and released on the scene.

Officials said the fire was under control within a few minutes, but the unit where the fire occurred was declared uninhabitable by the city's building department.

Firefighters are continuing to investigate the cause.
