Splat. Flying pies a reading reward at Frederick School in Grayslake

Pies were flying in the Frederick School library in Grayslake Wednesday.

No, there wasn't a food fight. Kids got a chance to throw chocolate cream pies at school librarian Robert Depke, and Assistant Principal Jodi Cinq-Mars, as a reward for participation in the Rebecca Caudill Young Readers Book Award program for fourth- through eighth-graders in Illinois.

Frederick students who read 10 or more books on the Rebecca Caudill list were invited to attend Wednesday's festivities. Nine kids who read all 20 of the books on the list were chosen to throw the pies.

Students read from a list of 20 books and picked their favorites. This year, Frederick school picked "The Running Dream" by Wendelin Van Draanen. The state winner was "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio.

"I'm not looking forward to it," Depke said of the flying pies. "But it's a way to get a good group of students together for a celebration honoring their hard work and achievements."
