• David L. Schaefer Jr., 42, of the 400 block of Mary Place, Elgin, was charged with retail theft Sunday after he took less than $300 worth of merchandise from Butera Market, 1 Clock Tower Plaza, according to court documents. His bail was set at $40,000 and his next court date is March 19.

• Two horses valued at $2,000 were stolen at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday from the Northern Illinois Equine Training Center, 48W206 Immelman Lane, Hampshire, according to a sheriff's report. A witness reported that two women who had been seen at the facility before walked the two horses out of their stables that afternoon but never returned, the report said.
