Geneva, Burlington girls head to state

The Geneva and Burlington Central girls basketball teams boarded buses Thursday for their trip to the state tournament this weekend at Redbird Arena on the campus of Illinois State University in Normal.

It's the Vikings' second state berth in school history. They will put a 14-game winning streak and a 26-5 record on the line at 6:30 p.m. Friday against Rolling Meadows in Class 4A.

The winner of Friday's semifinal will play either Marian Catholic or Whitney Young for the state championship Saturday. Geneva took fourth in its other state appearance in 2009.

Burlington Central takes on top-ranked Montini at 12:15 p.m. Friday in Class 3A. It's the first time any Burlington Central basketball team, boys or girls, has qualified for a state final tournament.

Friday's winner will meet the winner of the Joliet Catholic-Quincy Notre Dame game in Saturday's championship.
