Extreme temps hamper school firefighting efforts

RACINE, Wis. - Firefighters worked in temperatures hovering around zero as they battled a fire at a Racine school.

Authorities say the fire at Mitchell Elementary and Middle School started about 1:30 a.m. Thursday. WTMJ-TV reports police responded to an alarm at the school, discovered smoke and called the fire department.

The roof has partially collapsed at the school where firefighters were dealing with equipment that was freezing in the frigid weather. School administrators have canceled classes at the damaged school.
