Hearings to resume on college football union
Federal hearings on an attempt by Northwestern University football players to form the nation's first college athletes' union are set to resume.
Tuesday's National Labor Relations Board hearings restart in Chicago federal court after a three day break.
The agency must rule in coming weeks on whether the football players qualify as employees under U.S. law. If so, the players have rights to unionize.
Northwestern administrators are fighting the effort. They say student-athletes don't qualify as employees.
Witnesses for Northwestern last week included head coach Pat Fitzgerald. Outgoing senior quarterback Kain Colter testified for the pro-union side.
The hearings were initially scheduled to last three days, but have stretched to at least a fifth day. They're expected to end this week.
