Exhibit explores NW Indiana soldiers in Civil War

HAMMOND, Ind. - An exhibit at the Indiana Welcome Center in Hammond explores the draw of northwestern Indiana volunteers to fight for the Union in the Civil War.

The free exhibit called "Region United, Nation Divided: Following Lincoln" tells the stories of the region's volunteer troops who answered President Abraham Lincoln's call to service in America's bloodiest war. The (Munster) Times reports the exhibit runs through April 30.

A similar exhibit last year, "Region United, Nation Divided: Civil War in the South Shore," attracted more than 8,000 visitors and was awarded event/project of the year by the Indiana Historical Society. The new exhibit includes some of last year's material with new items including narrative histories of the region's volunteer infantry regiments.
