Fog causes pileup on I-57

Low visibility is being blamed for a multivehicle crash in the northbound lanes of Interstate 57 near Peotone.

Illinois State Police said fog blanketed the area at the time of crash Thursday, which shut down traffic in both directions. The southbound lanes and one northbound lane were reopened to traffic several hours after the accident. Northbound traffic may be hindered for hours as efforts are made to clear away wreckage.

Authorities said at least three semitrailer trucks are involved in the crash, with one catching fire. One vehicle was trapped beneath a semi. Extrication equipment and heavy cranes were brought to the scene by emergency crews.

State police spokeswoman Monique Bond said several people have been taken to area hospitals. The extent of the injuries wasn't immediately known.
