Vernon Hills rolls in 3A semi
The number of points Vernon Hills' girls basketball team allowed in its state tournament opener Tuesday night matched its season loss total.
That's how dominant the Cougars were in their Class 3A regional semifinal against No. 17 Chicago Senn at Gordon Tech.
Mia Polisky's game-high 12 points led the top-seeded Cougars in their 65-5 win. Kasey Firnbach added 11 points for Vernon Hills (23-5), which extended its winning streak to 12 games. Sydney Smith and Lauren Webb had 10 and 7 points, respectively.
Antioch 73, Ridgewood 21: At Guerin, the second-seeded Sequoits jumped out to a 23-1 lead after one quarter against the No. 15 seed.
Paige Gallimore scored a game-high 16 points while picking up 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals for Antioch (22-6). Carly McCameron tied her season high with 12 points, while also collecting 5 rebounds and 5 steals.
Sophomore Maddie Murillo picked up her first career double-double, as she scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Freshman twins Amy and Ashley Reiser grabbed 10 and 8 rebounds, respectively. Each Reiser scored 4 points.
Lake Forest 42, Warren 39: At Lake Forest, the host Scouts avenged a pair of regular-season losses.
Warren finishes the season with a 9-20 record.
Rolling Meadows 64, Lake Zurich 22: At Rolling Meadows, the top-seeded Mustangs cruised.
Lake Zurich finishes the season with an 8-19 record.
North Chicago 70, Lakes 47: On Monday night at North Chicago, the Warhawks won the Class 3A regional semifinal on their home court.
North Chicago was led by Samantha Rodriguez with 23 points and Tineesha Coleman with 18.
Lakes (5-24) was paced by freshman Izzy Quaranta with 12 points, senior Sam Ney with 11 and sophomore Ellie Haviland with 10.
"We got down early and then played well the final half," Lakes coach Pete Schneider said. "We have come a long way from where we started this year, and I am extremely proud of these kids for their constant effort. These kids work so hard. It's tough that we could not put it all together this season."
Lakes will graduate Ney, Kelsey Kohler and Alexis Lee.
"We are going to be fine, as we have some great underclassmen that have learned a great deal from our seniors, on not only how to play the game but how to approach life and to treat each other," Schneider said. "Freshman Natalie Pawlak and junior Olivia Pawlak have been playing well, with some solid rebounding and defense. Olivia is a solid 6-2 post that can run. she has come a long way this season.
"Our season is over this year, but I am confident that these kids will continue to play and improve. If they continue their growth that they started this year, they will become a very good team."
