Georgia man pleads guilty to battery at Elk Grove hotel

Facing charges that he molested two girls at a hotel pool in Elk Grove Village, a traveling salesman from Georgia pleaded guilty to aggravated battery Tuesday and was sentenced to prison.

Charles R. Smith, 57, of Lawrenceville, Ga., was sentenced to three years in prison in exchange for his guilty plea, which came after Cook County prosecutors dropped sexual abuse charges against him.

During Smith's initial bond hearing, prosecutors said Smith was staying at the Ramada O'Hare hotel in July 2012 when he molested two girls in a hotel swimming pool. Prosecutors said he entered the pool claiming to be a lifeguard and offered to give the girls swimming lessons. The girls said he touched them inappropriately, prosecutors said.
