Solorio gets 1,000th point for Elk Grove

Melissa Solorio's final free throws in Monday's 55-26 victory over Addison Trail in the Class 4A Batavia regional are two the senior will never forget.

They put her in elite company, giving her 1,000 points for her four-year varsity career.

Needing 18 points to reach the milestone, Solorio scored her 18th and 19th points midway through the final quarter to become the Grenadiers' second player in two years to reach the magic number.

Diamond Boyd did it last season, which was coach Kathie Swanson's first at Elk Grove.

"We've had two in my two years here and I had none when I was at Libertyville (head coach for six years before taking over at Elk Grove)," Swanson said. "Melissa obviously has the ability so it was nice to see her get it before senior year ended. It's a nice accomplishment."

Solorio and Amber Lindfors (12 rebounds) both scored 19 points as the Grenadiers (9-18) advanced to today's 6 p.m. semifinal to face No. 3 Batavia.

Solorio, who also plays soccer and volleyball at Elk Grove, also collected 9 rebounds, 5 assists and converted a pair of 3-point baskets.

"She is definitely a dual threat," Swanson added. "She can go inside and she can hit the 3-pointer. She is definitely a versatile offensive player."

at Buffalo Grove: Dahlia Cohen scored 16 points to pace No. 18 Highland Park in a 56-53 decision over No. 14 Deerfield.

at New Trier: No. 16 Leyden posted a 63-52 victory over No. 17 Mather to advance to today's semifinal against top-seeded New Trier.

at Maine West: No. 13 Lane Tech netted a 2-0 forfeit victory over No. 20 Lake View and will meet the regional host and No. 4 seed Maine West at 6 p.m. Tuesday in semifinal play.

No. 12 Taft, a 72-32 victory against No. 21 Schurz, will meet No. 5 Maine South at approximately 8 p.m. in the subsequent semifinal matchup.
