Marian Central rolls over cold-shooting St. Edward

A couple of minutes into its game with Marian Central, St. Edward led 5-4, and life was good.

But that was about as good as it got for the Green Wave Friday night. After Joe French's 3-pointer gave them the early lead, the shots stopped falling.

The Hurricanes scored the next 15 points and eventually coasted to a 60-44 Suburban Christian Gold boys basketball win in Woodstock.

The Wave shot 19 percent from the field in the first half and, to top it off, went 0-for-7 from the free-throw line. A fourth-quarter surge got the Wave up to 28 percent for the game, but they couldn't dig out of their big first-half hole.

"They outplayed us for the entire game, I can't say anything other than that," said Wave coach PJ White. "I'm not sure we ever got off the bus. But they played well, you've got to say that."

The Hurricanes ran up and down the floor and, while not exactly shooting the lights out at 38 percent, kept their lead in double digits throughout the second half. They also dominated the backboards, outrebounding the Wave, 47-31.

St. Edward (18-7, 6-3) went without a double-figure scorer. French finished with 8 points, as did Danny Favela off the bench. John Butzow added 6 on a pair of fourth-quarter 3-pointers.

Marian featured balanced scoring, with 8 players scoring at least 4 points. Adam Pischke led with 13 and Derreck Caldez added 10 for Marian (10-14, 4-3).

St. Edward's best sequence was a 9-2 run in the span of about a minute early in the fourth quarter. Favela buried a shot, Matt Hesch scored on a short jumper, Devontae Elam put back a miss for his only points of the night, and a Gino Domel steal set up Butzow's 3-pointer to finish the run.

Unfortunately for St. Edward, that only made it 57-39 and, after a timeout, Marian regrouped.
