Daley nephew starts jail term

A nephew of former Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley began serving a 60-day jail sentence imposed after he pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the 2004 death of a Mount Prospect man during a fight outside a bar.

Richard Vanecko reported to McHenry County jail on Friday. After he is released he will serve 60 days of home confinement.

Twenty-one-year-old David Koschman died days after he fell and struck his head during the fight.

The case generated widespread attention because stories in the Chicago Sun-Times stories raised questions about whether Chicago police and Cook County prosecutors mishandled the original case. Koschman's family contended there was a police cover-up.

The 39-year-old Vanecko was scheduled to go on trial when he entered the guilty plea during a pretrial hearing last month.
