Visit 1-room schoolhouse, 1840s home in St. Charles

Chase away the winter blues and cabin fever when you visit an 1872 one-room schoolhouse in LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve in St. Charles.

You will experience local history at the Pioneer Sholes School Winter Open House from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, and Sunday, Feb. 16.

Visitors can view educational displays and enjoy a skit, songs and poetry performed by the junior docents at 2:30 p.m.

Materials will be on hand for children to make an old-fashioned craft of their own to take home. While having some refreshments, visit with docents and some students who had attended the one-room school before it closed in the 1940s. Admission is free, but donations are always welcome.

After your visit to the school stroll down the road to the Durant House Museum. Your winter experience continues in this 1843 home. A docent led tour through the wood fire heated house and refreshments will make your day complete. The Durant House is also open on Feb. 15-16 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Both museums are located in the LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, just off Dean Street, north of Route 64 in St. Charles. Call (630) 762-9746 for more information.
