Outlook: Lakes surprised a lot of people last weekend by winning the Wauconda regional and the Eagles will be taking eight individuals into the sectional competition in their home gym this weekend.

Even more impressive is that the Eagles were able to win the regional without key wrestlers Levi Smith (126) and Jared Smith (170) competing. But both of them are expected back in the lineup when Lakes (18-6) faces Hampshire regional champion Harvard Feb. 25 at the Antioch dual team sectional meet.

"We really did not wrestle well as a team at conference, but the good news is we had a great week of practice and they really came out and wrestled their style (at regionals)," said Lakes coach Mark Stave, whose team won their first regional crown in school history. "The bonus points were just amazing with the pins, and in the first round of wrestlebacks we had six or seven straight pins."

Besides the fact that state perennial power Montini will have numerous individuals competing at the Lakes sectional, the field also features some outstanding individuals from Lake County, starting with 220-pound Wauconda senior Nate Magiera.

The top-ranked Magiera takes a 43-0 record into the meet, and he is aiming for a fourth trip to state after placing fifth as a junior.

Antioch's Briley Schultz is expected to make a third trip to Champaign at 106, while Vernon Hills senior Jordan Reich (120) took home third place in the state as a junior.

Outlook: After winning its own regional over NSC rival Grant last weekend, Libertyville takes a lot of steam into the sectional meet with 11 individuals competing at Barrington.

The Wildcats have five seniors who reached the state meet last year, including Polakowski, and MacCallum, who will both be gunning for their third trips to the storied meet at the venue formerly known as the Assembly Hall.

Libertyville coach Dale Eggert is optimistic about getting at least those five individuals back to Champaign. Junior Joey Gunther (152) also has a great chance of advancing to state after winning a regional crown a week ago along with Polakowski, MacCallum, Koziol, Barbian and McDermand.

"Those five would like to return, but we're not counting anybody out," said Eggert, whose team will host Barrington Feb. 25 in a dual team sectional meet. "I'm happy somehow we were able to survive this (team regional) so I haven't given (the team sectional) much thought."

Grant's nine sectional qualifiers are led by 113-pound senior Nick Koch, who placed sixth in the state as a junior.

"We have a few kids out of those nine guys who have an opportunity to move forward," said Grant coach Ryan Geist. "It's a new season next week for the individuals, and we'll focus on that and try to get to the state tournament."

Lake Zurich senior Sean Lynch (152) has seen only limited action this season due to a football injury, but he is aiming to make his third appearance downstate.
