Applicants sought for sheriff's scholarships

The Lake County Sheriff's office will award one $500 scholarship to a student wishing to pursue higher education in the 2014-15 academic year, the office announced in a news release.

It is one of 106 scholarships the Illinois Sheriff's Association will award throughout the state.

The scholarships are to be applied to tuition, books, and fees only.

The student must be enrolled full-time at a certified institution of higher learning within the state of Illinois.

There will be no restriction on any applicant by reason of race, age, creed, color, sex or national origin. The only limitations for the Lake County scholarship are as follows:

• Applicants must be permanent Lake County residents.

• Scholarships must be utilized at institutions of higher learning within the state of Illinois.

• Students must be enrolled as a full-time student during the 2014-15 school year (excluding summer session).

Applications are available at the Lake County Sheriff's Office, 25 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., Waukegan, IL 60085; the Lake County Sheriff's Office Facebook page, www.facebook.com/LakeCoILSheriff; and the website www.lakecountyil.gov/Sheriff.

Students must complete the application, answer the essay question and return all documentation to the Lake County Sheriff's Office by March 15 (must be postmarked by this date).

In addition to the 106 scholarships awarded statewide, seven Peacekeeper Scholarships will be awarded. A separate application is required for this award and is also available at the Lake County Sheriff's Office, on the Facebook page, and website.
