CARMEL, Ind. -- Officials in an Indianapolis suburb say they might hire trappers to deal with a surge in complaints about coyotes in the community.

Carmel officials say the city just north of Indianapolis continues receiving reports of coyote sightings and about cats and dogs being threatened or missing.

Hamilton County animal control coordinator Tom Rogers says city residents are likely seeing the coyotes more often now because the harsh winter has made them more desperate for food. He believes sightings will decline once the snow melts.

The city is warning residents to watch any small pets, along with securing garbage cans and keeping food and water for pets indoors.

Police in the southern Indianapolis suburb of Greenwood have issued similar recommendations after numerous coyote complaints there in the past couple years.
