Naturalist to visit season's final Book Between Bites

On Thursday, May 15, Batavia's monthly noontime book program "Books Between Bites" welcomes Pam Otto of St. Charles Park District for its final program of the season.

The free book discussion series will be from noon to 1 p.m. at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave.

Otto will discuss "A Girl of the Limberlost" by Gene Stratton-Porter, a book given to her by a neighbor when she was young and that inspired her to become a naturalist.

For the program, attendees are invited to travel back in time with one of many enchanting tales from the pen of Indiana author/naturalist Gene Stratton-Porter. This story, first published in 1909, follows young Elnora Comstock as she matures from awkward teen to fine young adult - a spectacular transformation mirrored by the book's other leading "characters": the caterpillars and moths.

Otto, who also dabbles in writing, is avidly involved with nature in her work as a St. Charles Park District manager. She will highlight specific passages and present examples of the moths portrayed in Stratton-Porter's prose. To learn more about the author, visit the Gene Stratton-Porter Memorial Society website, www.genestratton-porter.com.

A special activity for this final program of the season, people are invited to bring a favorite book from their childhood. There will be a table on which the books will be displayed and tags will be available to fill out and place by each book.

The public is invited to attend this free program and reservations are not required. It is held in the large community room on the main level of the Batavia Public Library. Parking is available in the lot just south and adjacent to the library.

People can bring their lunch and eat as they enjoy the program and discussion. Lunch items, beverages and baked goods can be purchased at Chapters Coffeehouse & Café, located just inside the library.
