Resurrection University hosts bone marrow registry Feb. 17

Since February 17, 1914, the College of Nursing at Resurrection University, has graduated thousands of nurses who have gone on to work in public health, social services, research, hospitals, private practice and management. This year, in 2014, Resurrection University, a College of Nursing and Allied Health celebrates 100 years of nursing.

For the College of Nursing's 100th Anniversary, Founder's Day activities include a student-led Bone Marrow Registry for the Delete Blood Cancer (DKMS) organization on Monday, February 17 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Resurrection University @ Presence Saint Elizabeth Hospital, 1431 N. Claremont in Chicago. ResU nursing students will help the public complete a consent form and swab the inside of their cheeks for tissue typing to help find a potential match for patients in need. There is no fee to sign up, and almost anyone between the ages of 18 to 55 can participate. The process is painless and takes less than five minutes. For more information regarding donating, contact Jeri at 773.252.5131.

Blood cancer is the second leading cause of all cancer deaths in the U.S. It kills more children in the U.S. than any other disease. However, many patients can be saved with bone marrow transplants. Every year, 10,000 people will need a bone marrow transplant, but only half will get one. Nearly 70 percent of patients must rely on a stranger to give them a second chance at life.

ResU is proud to recognize the achievements and dedication of all of its nurses who began their careers with an education from the College of Nursing with activities such as the University's first Bone Marrow Registry. Exactly 100 years ago on February 17, 1914, the College of Nursing, previously called West Suburban Hospital School for Nurses opened its doors in Oak Park, Illinois.

ResU's 100th year celebration of the College of Nursing will also include a series of events in May including Homecomings, Class Reunions, a Centennial Dinner and Mission Fair.
