Dundee-Crown turns the tables on Crystal Lake S.
Losing two tough games to Crystal Lake South this season, Dundee-Crown was hoping to turn the tables on the Gators Monday night.
Mission accomplished.
Opening up a 13-point lead in the third quarter, the Chargers held off a valiant fourth quarter really by South in defeating the Gators 50-48 in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division girls basketball action in Carpentersville.
‘This is a huge win for our girls and our program,” said first-year D-C coach Sarah Miller. “Crystal Lake South is a very talented team but we played right with them the previous two games and believed we could beat them. We really battled tonight and played with a lot of heart. Give credit to our girls. We kept our composure at the end of the game.”
Holding a slim 24-20 lead at halftime, the Chargers came out sizzling to start the third.
With Francesca Scarpelli canning a 3-pointer along with 2 baskets from Lauren Lococo and a putback by Emily Michalski, the Chargers connected on their first 4 shots of the second half in a 9-0 run.
With 5:52 left in the third quarter, D-C had widened its 4-point halftime lead to 13, 33-20.
But the Gators weren’t about to give up and sliced the Charger lead to 5, 39-34, as Chantel Fanter’s 15-footer to beat the buzzer to end the third quarter.
The Chargers (7-19, 2-8) looked to be in good shape when Jesenia Laboy made 2 free throws with 1:10 remaining to give D-C a 49-41 advantage.
But South (13-11, 4-4) ended the game on a 7-1 run which included a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Fanter.
Laboy enjoyed a monster effort for the winning Chargers with 20 points, 11 rebounds, 3 blocked shots and 3 assists.
“Coach stressed to us if we played four quarters of basketball against South we could beat them,” said Laboy. “We played them tough the first two games but didn’t finish. My teammates got me the ball in good scoring position. This was a huge win.”
Lococo joined Laboy in double figures with 15 points for D-C.
Fanter led the Gators with a game-high 22 points which included 3 treys while Sara Mickow tallied 13 points with 11 boards.
“They decided to play for 32 minutes and we didn’t,” said Gators coach Kyle McCaughn, “D-C played us tough in the previous two games. Give D-C credit. They executed better than us.”
