SPRINGFIELD -- Springfield-area supermarkets are expected to hire hundreds of workers in the next few months, raising hopes that it will ease unemployment.

The State Journal-Register in Springfield reports that there'll be openings for full- and part-time positions for everything from checkout clerks to pharmacy technicians.

Hy-Vee plans to fill 400 jobs at a supermarket and convenience store expected to open by early summer, and Aldi will hold a job fair on Monday to hire up to a dozen workers.

The newspaper says Schnucks may open one or two new stores.

Mary Beth Ray is director of career development services at Lincoln Land Community College. She says there are many different jobs at today's modern supermarkets, including florists, photo center technicians and dietitians.

She says some will pay over minimum wage.
