Pedestrian killed in downtown Aurora crash

A pedestrian was killed early Sunday morning when struck by an SUV in downtown Aurora.

Police said the unidentified victim, described as a Hispanic man in his late 30s or 40s, was walking south on Broadway Avenue (Route 25), just north of Spring Street, about 3:58 a.m. when the accident occurred. He was pronounced dead at the scene

The driver of the 2006 Mitsubishi SUV, Cherise Wardlow, 39, of Montgomery, told police she was heading south in the right lane of Broadway when she heard a loud thump from in front of the vehicle. She immediately stopped and discovered she had hit the man.

There were no signs of alcohol or drugs at the scene, police said. Wardlow was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

The Aurora Police Traffic Division continues to investigate the crash. Anyone who may have witnessed it is asked to call investigators at (630) 256-5330.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday at the Kane County coroner’s office.
