CHICAGO -- Maestro Riccardo Muti has extended his contract with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra through 2020.

Muti has been the symphony's music director since 2010. On Monday, the orchestra and Muti announced he has signed another five-year contract. His first contract started in 2010 and runs until 2015. His new contract runs from 2015 to 2020.

The contract calls for Muti to conduct at least 10 weeks of Chicago Symphony Orchestra subscription concerts each season, plus lead the orchestra in domestic and international tours.

A native of Naples, Italy, Muti first led the Chicago orchestra as a guest conductor at the Ravinia Festival in 1973. He led Milan's La Scala from 1986 to 2005.

Muti said in a statement that he loves Chicago and performing with the orchestra's musicians.
