Agency makes school-security grants available

State officials say $25 million in grants are being made available to improve security at public schools, from kindergartens to state universities.

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency is managing the grants and has begun accepting applications for the funds.

It says installing reinforced doors, adding shatterproof glass and putting in better locks at main school entrances have been identified as top priorities.

Multiple criteria will be used to determine what schools will win the grants. They include whether schools already have emergency operations plans in place or whether some already face unique risks.

Grant applications are due by March 14. And the recipients will be announced sometime in the spring.
