Suburban events Saturday being canceled due to snow

With a major winter storm looming Friday night, many local events planned for Saturday were being canceled.

Among the cancellations announced Friday afternoon were the IHSA cheerleading sectional competitions, which have been moved to the same time Sunday in Grayslake and Rolling Meadows.

In Schaumburg, there will be no classes for grades 1-6 at the Church of the Holy Spirit religious education program.

The Glen Ellyn Speed Skating Club has been told by the Glen Ellyn Park District that the district's snow-removal efforts will be too dispersed tomorrow to allow its planned event at Lake Ellyn. The club plans to reschedule for a future date.

Also in Glen Ellyn, the College of DuPage is closed.

In West Chicago. Community High School District 94 has canceled sports and activities.

Congregation Kneseth Israel in Elgin said there will be no morning shabbat services.

District 127 in Grayslake has closed Central High School and North High School.

Queen of the Rosary's religious education classes in Elk Grove Village are canceled.

In Hoffman Estates, St. Hubert religious education classes have been canceled. The same is true for St. Margaret Mary Parish and St. Thomas the Apostle in Naperville, St. Mathew Parish in Schaumburg and St. Mary Parish in West Chicago.

The West Aurora School District 129 Fine Arts Festival scheduled Saturday has been canceled, district spokesman Mike Chapin said Friday night. All Saturday sporting events occurring at West Aurora High School and the Winter One Acts also are canceled, as are the Fox Valley Park District Sports Saturday programs at Hall, McCleery and Schneider schools. Light snow is expected to begin falling this evening. But a period of heavy snow is expected early Saturday morning and to continue until early evening, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service's office in Romeoville has issued a winter storm warning for the entire Chicago area, effective from 9 p.m. today through 6 p.m. Saturday.

Forecasters are predicting snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour midmorning Saturday and a total accumulation of 6-10 inches by the end of the snowfall Saturday night.

The weather service has advised that snow-covered roads and low visibilities may make travel hazardous early Saturday morning through the early evening.

Schaumburg sent out an alert that it will deploy approximately 80 people to clear the roads, divided into two crews to provide 24 hour coverage. Salting hills, curves and controlled intersections will be the priority, with primary streets salted in both directions.

The Elgin office for Illinois State Police District 2 covering Cook, Kane, Dekalb, Lake, McHenry and Kane Counties has issued a winter travel advisory.

State police asked drivers to monitor conditions, limit travel and allow plenty of extra time. Drivers were encouraged to put extra water, food, and warm clothing in their vehicle.

Upon approaching a stationary authorized emergency vehicle, reduce speed and yield the right-of-way by changing lanes away from an authorized emergency vehicle.

Flights at O'Hare and Midway airports could also be affected. High temperatures in the 20s are expected Saturday and in the teens on Sunday.
