Indiana Senate panel OKs study to help veterans with PTSD

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injuries could get help from the state if support for a Senate bill continues.

The Senate Health Committee on Wednesday voted unanimously in support of the bill. The legislation would require the Indiana State Department of Health to study whether it’s feasible to begin funding a program in support of veterans.

The study would be aimed at counting Indiana veterans suffering from PTSD or traumatic brain injuries, learning the best treatments available and the economic cost and impact of the program.

The Indiana Veterans Behavioral Health Network says about 20 percent of the state’s veterans have diagnosable symptoms of PTSD.

The bill needs approval from the full Senate, the House and the governor before it can become law.
