Suburban schools begin announcing Monday, Tuesday closings

With another blast of dangerously cold weather expected to descend upon the region overnight, some suburban school districts already are announcing that they’ll be closed Monday and, in at least one instance, Tuesday.

Arlington Heights Elementary District 25 announced early this afternoon it would cancel classes both Monday and Tuesday because of the frigid forecast. Carpentersville-based Community Unit District 300 also called off classes Monday and Tuesday.

Others announcing Monday cancellations include Maine Township High School District 207, West Aurora Unit District 129, Northwest Suburban High School District 214, Des Plaines Elementary District 62, Huntley Unit District 158, Mount Prospect Elementary District 57, and many others.

Despite officials’ assurances last week that Stevenson High School would be open Monday no matter what, school leaders there had a change of heart Sunday and decided that the Lincolnshire school would join the ranks of schools canceling classes Monday.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory effective until 6 a.m. Monday, forecasting significant blowing and drifting of snow, which along with a period of additional snow showers this evening, may lead to near blizzard conditions at times. The agency also issued a Wind Chill Warning effective from 3 a.m. Monday to 9 a.m. Wednesday. forecasting wind chills that at times could reach 30 to 45 degrees below zero.
