I had just left an assignment in Carpentersville recently after a snow storm hit the area, and had to double back in my car to shoot a picture of this stranded vehicle parked in a driveway along Maple Avenue. The sight of the abandoned snow shovel cracked me up. I assume the driver finished the job at some point, but they clearly needed a break with more than six inches of snow to clear from the driveway. This photo was published in the Perspective column in the print edition.

There are often times when a photographer has to make a choice between similar photos during the editing process. While covering the Chili Open at the Golf Center in Des Plaines recently, I photographed Jessica Lang of Mount Prospect just as she had slipped on an icy green while attempting a putt. The frame turned in for the next day's paper showed Lang smiling as, undeterred by her circumstances, she lined up the putt and shot anyway. After missing that attempt however, her teammates razzed her by kicking snow onto her as she gave it another try. This photo was published in the Perspective column in the print edition.

A green plant sits in a window while a snow covered background sets the scene on a cold January afternoon in Naperville. I liked the way the leaves filled the frame and offered a glimpse of spring, so I snapped a quick frame. This photo was published in the Perspective column in the print edition.

Andy Patete, of South Elgin, blasts the new snow from the sidewalks Tuesday morning near his Spring Street home, behind the protection of a plastic shield affixed to his snow thrower.
