The Northwest Cultural Council announces a Second Saturday Poetry Workshop to be held from 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday, Feb. 8, led by Jennifer Dotson. Saturday’s topic will be “Performance Skills for Poets?”

Jennifer Dotson is the founder and program coordinator for www.highlandparkpoetry.org. Her poetry has appeared in “After Hours, East On Central,” CRAM/JOMP and Poetic License Press? anthology “A Midnight Snack.” Her debut collection, “Clever Gretel,” was published in April 2013, by Chicago Poetry Press. Dotson, who teaches creative writing classes for District 113’s Continuing Education program, received a master’s degree in drama from the University of Virginia.

With her theater training and extensive acting credits, Dotson will share performance tips and tricks to give poets confidence at open-mics and readings.

This workshop provides poets with performance tricks and tips to improve public reading skills and take the scary out of performing poetry. Participants should wear comfortable clothes for stretching/relaxation and bring one poem (30 lines max.) for practice reading with the group.

Participants are encouraged to bring 15 copies of their own work to share with the group. Workshops take place at the Palatine Public Library, 700 N. North Court, Palatine, the second Saturday of each month. All poets and writers are invited to attend the workshop. The cost is $15.
